BOMA Advocates for Energy Star Program Funding
Earlier this year, the Federal government targeted the Energy Star program for elimination or privitization. BOMA and our allies have been on Capitol Hill educating Congress about the importance of the program to the commercial real estate sector and that it is deserving of support.
The Latest News
In mid-July the House Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee and the House Energy and Water Appropriations Committee passed a spending bill that contains approximately $32 million for the Energy Star program.
On July 24th, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed their version of the Interior & Environment spending bill that included $36 million in the bill text AND in report language for the Energy Star program.
The report language and inclusion of the program in both spending bills show Congressional support for the program. BOMA has played a significant role in this endeavor, using many of the tools in our toolbox to help educate and convince senators and congressmen that the program is smart policy that is beneficial to the nation and therefore deserves support.
But while the tides have shifted in our favor - the funding battle is not over. We must continue to press lawmakers on the importance of the Energy Star program. Only when the spending bill is signed into law will we stop.
How You Can Help
To show your support, we encourage you to visit BOMA’s Legislative Action Center to send a pre-written letter supporting the Energy Star program to your Representatives and Senators. Each letter will help drive home the importance of the program.
We will continue to monitor this issue and provide updates to our membership. Check back here for more updates to come.
