Building Owners to Reduce Energy Consumption by 30%

For Information: Tammy Betancourt 713.266.5691 February 18, 2008 – The Houston Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) announced today that it has accepted Mayor Bill White’s challenge to improve the quality of life in Houston and is encouraging all its members to commit to a 30 percent energy reduction in office buildings across the city by 2012. This makes Houston the first large city in the United States to accept BOMA International’s 7-Point Challenge to further green and sustainable practices – a move that has received praise from the EPA. As integral members of this community, we feel it is imperative we go above and beyond Mayor White’s environmental initiatives and to take a proactive leadership role, said John Kelley, President of Houston BOMA. Our building owners are...

BOMA HOUSTON IS AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE OF THE YEAR AWARD

LAS VEGAS (January 28, 2007) At the opening luncheon of its Winter Business Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA) awarded BOMA Houston with the coveted 2007 Government Affairs Committee of the Year Award. BOMA Houston was cited for its aggressive advocacy agenda in support of the association’s mission advancing the interests of the commercial real estate industry. A few of the projects mentioned by the judges were: · When the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) attempted to unionize the city’s janitorial workforce, BOMA Houston mobilized its resources by hiring a law firm and public relations firm and enlisting its members to lessen the union’s impact. · The association was integral in drafting an ordinance impacting commercial properties which would create a notification system for owners when their building plans were accessed, thereby increasing security for the tenancy of the...

Landmark Notification Ordinance Passed

HOUSTON BUILDING OWNERS APPLAUD NOTIFICATION ORDINANCE

In a landmark decision, Houston City Council adopted an ordinance allowing the notification of building owners when their building plans are accessed. A voluntary program adopted on December 21st, the ordinance requires that upon registration and the payment of a $50 fee for two years, each building owner or its representative will be notified each time any individual requests access to structural building plans. “This ordinance is a cooperative effort to increase the safety and security of the people who work in the City of Houston,” said BOMA Houston President Rush Durkin with Hines. “The Houston Building Owners and Managers applaud Mayor Bill White, City Council and especially Council Member Adrian Garcia for spearheading this initiative. This is a groundbreaking program that exists nowhere else in the country.” The Houston BOMA Legislative Advocacy Committee and BOMA staff worked with Councilmember Adrian Garcia's office for nearly a year developing the ordinance.

An excellent example of a public/government partnership, it is anticipated that this ordinance will be emulated as the model for municipalities nationwide.
