BOMA HOUSTON IS AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE OF THE YEAR AWARD 

LAS VEGAS  (January 28, 2007)  At the opening luncheon of its Winter Business Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA) awarded BOMA Houston with the coveted 2007 Government Affairs Committee of the Year Award.

BOMA Houston was cited for its aggressive advocacy agenda in support of the association’s mission advancing the interests of the commercial real estate industry. 

A few of the projects mentioned by the judges were:

·        When the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) attempted to unionize the city’s janitorial workforce, BOMA Houston mobilized its resources by hiring a law firm and public relations firm and enlisting its members to lessen the union’s impact.

·        The association was integral in drafting an ordinance impacting commercial properties which would create a notification system for owners when their building plans were accessed, thereby increasing security for the tenancy of the city. This was groundbreaking and the first program of its kind in the country.

·        BOMA Houston collaborated with the city’s fire department to initiate an effort to install automatic fire sprinkler systems in all high-rise buildings as well as working hand in hand with the city on crafting the graffiti ordinance. 

·        Finally, the association worked with the mayor and the Building Services Department to assist them with placing the city’s facilities under the management of a third party.

The Houston Building Owners and Managers Association is a premier network of over 580 commercial real estate professionals representing over 250 million square feet of commercial real estate in the Houston area.
